London has six airports, and the transfer costs vary enormously between them. Heathrow—the most common arrival point for long-haul visitors—offers the clearest comparison of options.

The Heathrow Express is the fastest route: 15 minutes non-stop to Paddington station, costing £25 for a single or £37 return if booked online in advance. Walk-up tickets at the station are £37 single—nearly 50% more for the same seat. This is London's most expensive regular train service per mile, and locals almost never use it. It exists for business travelers on expenses and tourists who don't know about the alternatives.

The Elizabeth Line (formerly TfL Rail/Crossrail) transformed Heathrow transfers when it opened. It runs from Heathrow to central London stations including Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Liverpool Street, and Canary Wharf for £5.50–£10.80 depending on time of day and whether you use contactless/Oyster (cheaper) or buy a paper ticket (more expensive). Journey time to Paddington is 25–30 minutes—only 10–15 minutes slower than the Heathrow Express at less than half the price. This is now the default recommendation for nearly every visitor.

The Piccadilly Line on the Tube connects Heathrow to central London for £5.50 on an Oyster card or contactless payment. The journey to Leicester Square takes approximately 50–60 minutes. It's slow, it's often crowded, and there's no dedicated luggage space—but at £5.50, it's hard to argue with the price. Avoid this option during the morning rush (7:30–9:30am) when commuters pack the trains and wrestling with a suitcase earns hostile looks.

Taxis from Heathrow to central London cost £60–£100 on the meter depending on traffic and exact destination. The regulated black cabs use a meter; you cannot negotiate or fix the price in advance. Uber charges £35–£65 for the same journey—significantly less than a black cab—but Heathrow's pickup point is in the short-stay car park, adding 5–10 minutes of walking with luggage.

National Express coaches run from Heathrow to Victoria Coach Station for £6–£10 if booked in advance online. Journey time is 40–60 minutes in light traffic, but can stretch to 90+ minutes during rush hours. This is the budget option for travelers heading to Victoria, Pimlico, or Westminster.

For Gatwick airport, the Gatwick Express (£19.90 online, 30 min to Victoria) competes with Southern Rail (£10–£15, 35–45 min to Victoria or London Bridge) and Thameslink (£10–£15, 45 min to King's Cross/St Pancras via London Bridge). The Southern/Thameslink trains are the smart choice—nearly half the price with marginally longer journey times.

Stansted and Luton—both used heavily by budget airlines—are the farthest airports. Stansted Express costs £19.40 to Liverpool Street (47 min). National Express buses to both airports run £8–£14 from Victoria Coach Station. These airports' distance from central London (50–55 km) means taxi and Uber costs of £80–£140, making public transport the only sensible option for individuals.
